The mass migration of Balkan people to the plains took place during the Crimean War of 1853-1856. The need for arable land to provide for the livelihood of the large families forced the Balkan people to set out in search of the fertile lands north of the Balkans. There were about 30-40 families, mainly from Gabrovo, Dryanovo, Tarnovo and Elena. The caravan of settlers settled on two opposite hills, between which a small natural ravine still flows today.

The Balbunar (Kubrat) Bey ordered the surrounding Turkish villages to help the newcomers with wheat to feed themselves and have for sowing. They were also given a forest. Two legends are told about the name Chereshovo. The first is that when the Balkan settlers settled the village, they discovered many wild cherries, and the second – when they cleared the terrain, they discovered a cherry orchard [1] . It is assumed that the Turkish settlement of Yurtluka existed on this site before.

After the formation of the village in 1855, Ivan Kyuchukov was elected as the elder.

The newly founded village is entirely Bulgarian. The forest is cut down, the terrain cleared. The construction of the houses begins, which are typical Balkan houses. Two main neighborhoods are formed: the Upper and the Lower, and later a third called the New. The first two neighborhoods are located along the ravine, crossing two opposite hills, protected from the cold north wind. Usually the houses are located in yards according to family characteristics. Members of one family become neighbors.

With the new settlers came craftsmen who had various professions necessary for the economic activities of the population: builders, potters, blacksmiths, coopers, tailors, coppersmiths, carters, carpenters, etc. Since the village had an abundance of drinking water, they built three fountains with many stone troughs.

After the founders of the village settled permanently, the settlement grew very quickly, the population increased, the houses also, and the need for a church arose. The first church was built immediately in the same way as the houses of the Balkan people were built.

Chereshovo after the Liberation

The village of Chereshovo is the center of a municipality, which includes the village of Golyamo Vranovo, Ruse region (1883–1890), the village of Kosharna, Ruse region (1883–1887, 1934–1944), the village of Malko Vranovo, Ruse region (1883–1919), the village of Stambolovo, Ruse region (1883–1887, 1934–1944), and the village of Seslav (1934–1936). In 1947, a stonemasonry department for quarrying quarry stone was opened at the cooperative. In 1948, a second consumer store was opened to serve the population. Along with trade, credit lending also expanded. Since 1949, the cooperative has been renamed the All-Russian Cooperative “Consciousness” – village of Chereshovo. The purchasing activity has expanded, with 4 points being opened for purchasing eggs, poultry, wool, skins, straw, hay, fodder and other agricultural products in four villages.

On February 24, 1953, the Village Cooperative “Consciousness”, the All-Union Cooperative “Sila” – the village of Kosharna, the All-Union Cooperative in the village of Stambolovo and the All-Union Cooperative in the village of Seslav merged into one cooperative under the name Consumer Cooperative “Consciousness” with the center in the village of Chereshovo. This necessitated the establishment of a Municipal Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party in the village. The task of the Municipal Committee was to manage and control agriculture, trade, people’s councils, healthcare and education.

The municipal Komsomol organization in the village of Chereshovo has existed as such since 1959. Its members include Komsomol members from the villages of Chereshovo and Seslav. For the proper management of the socio-political and labor life in the village, a Municipal Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party was established, which also necessitated the establishment of a Municipal Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party. The secretary was Racho Stoyanov, and after him Ivan Stoynov. The main tasks that are at the attention of the committee are the organizational strengthening of Komsomol societies, strengthening the cooperative system, building a correct attitude of young people towards cooperative property, involving young people in the labor activity of the cooperative economy, political education, working with young people of Turkish origin. In 1963, 4 circles with various topics were established within the Komsomol organization: the youth revolutionary movement, the history of the Bulgarian Communist Party, the heroic past of the native land, and others. According to the Council of Ministers No. 77 of 5 Dec. 1978 on the establishment and development of settlement systems, Decree No. 2295 of 26 Dec. 1978 on determining the seats and composition of municipalities in the country and by decision of the Municipal People’s Council – the village of Yuper, the seats of the town halls in a settlement system with the village of Yuper as its center were determined. The village of Chereshovo was designated as the seat of the town hall. The elections for local government bodies were held on 23 March 1979 with the administrative-territorial changes in the country by Decree No. 3005 of 6 Oct. 1987 of the State Council of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria of 1 Jan. 1988. The Municipal People’s Council of the settlement system of the village of Yuper was closed and the village of Chereshovo passed as a town hall to the GNS – Kubrat. The main tasks of the City Hall – village of Chereshovo are to ensure the implementation of the decisions of the Municipal Council – Razgrad, to organize public works and take care of the maintenance of the street network and engineering facilities, to monitor the cleanliness and sanitation of the settlement, to ensure compliance with public order and to provide administrative services to citizens. As a body implementing state policy on its territory, the City Hall, within its competence, carries out the general management and coordinates the activities of organizations in agriculture, trade and services, education, culture and healthcare. Administrative services to the population are one of the main tasks of the City Hall during the reporting period. It is related to the quality and timely implementation of services to citizens. An important condition for improving the quality of clerical work are the organized workshops, seminars and methodological assistance provided by specialists from the Municipal Council – village of Yuper for work on financial and accounting activities. In 1980 The Unified System for Civil Registration and Administrative Services of the Population (ESGRAON) has been implemented. The leading sector in the village’s economy is agriculture. The main sectors in it are crop production and livestock breeding. Field and mechanization brigades operate. The following crops are grown: beets, wheat, corn, beans, vineyards, tomatoes, peppers, etc. An additional brigade of pensioners is also being created for picking grapes and harvesting beans, beets and fruits. Livestock breeding is represented by the sheep farm and the cow farm. The implementation of the tasks under the Council of Ministers No. 76 for self-sufficiency of the population in meat, milk and eggs is one of the leading tasks of the mayor’s office, which creates conditions for its year-round and rhythmic supply with these products. Commercial services to the population are carried out by a branch of the RPK – village of Yuper.

On the territory of the town hall there is a grocery store, a restaurant, a pastry shop and a bakery. Other activities that are represented and satisfy the needs of the people of the village are the purchase of honey, herbs, walnuts, secondary raw materials and communal household services. This activity includes barbering, carpentry and metalworking services. There is also a hygienic bathhouse in the village. All other services related to repairs of washing machines, radios, televisions, tailoring and others are carried out in the “Malchika” DPP – Kubrat. An important moment in the town hall’s activities during the period is the implementation of the public works and construction program: repair of the health service – 1980; asphalting of streets – 1979 – 1989; sealing of 3 wells – 1979 – 1980; fencing of the cemetery park – 1982; construction of a car wash and gas station – 1983–1985; repair of the monument – 1985; reconstruction of the school’s PCC – 1985. Caring for the appearance of the village is one of the leading tasks of the town hall and the councilors. During the period, afforestation activities were carried out on deserted spaces and gardens. Common and silver spruce, birches, fir trees and ornamental shrubs were planted. An impetus was given to the sanitation and improvement of the village by cleaning homes, streets, public buildings, making sidewalks and eliminating all landfills. The town hall also pays attention to the issues of implementing the new socialist holidays and rituals, healthcare, education, transport and culture. Cultural life in the settlement is carried out by the community center, to which clubs, a women’s singing group and a library have been established. Of particular importance are the issues of maintaining public order, military mobilization readiness and civil defense, safety and traffic culture. During the period, the mayors of the village were Ivan Totev (1979–1986), Petar Bosev (1986–1988) and Rusi Stoyanov Rusev (since 1988).

Church

The first school was a cell, built next to the church, and the new stone church was built by the master builder Rayo Penev in 1863 and was consecrated and opened by priest Dorotei. Rayo Penev was born in 1832 and died in 1921. He knew the poet Kolyo Ficheto and before starting construction he went to him to get advice on what he should do to make the church strong and withstand the ravages of time. The church “Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary” is a single-domed church, with stone walls as thick as a fortress, in which there are deep niches ending with windows. At the bottom there is an internal wooden staircase that leads to a balcony, where students from the school choir used to line up and perform church songs on major Christian holidays. The carver Petar Genchev from Chereshovo worked on the interior decoration. He carved the internal supporting columns. The walls of the altar are decorated with icons, in the right corners of which the donors and the year are marked. A large part of the movable icons are silvered with donations from worshipers.

The surrounding villages of Malko Vranovo, Kosharna and Stambolovo supported the construction and decoration of the church with donations. These villages did not have Christian churches at that time and the Chereshovo church was a center for them. Today the church has been declared an architectural monument. The first priest of the Chereshovo parish after the Liberation was Panayot pop Trifonov, who served from 1877 to 1904. He had a monastic education. According to the report on the demographic situation in the Balbunar district for 1884, Chereshovo had 92 houses with 144 households. By 1920, the houses were already 184 with 240 households.

School

The population of the village grew rapidly, the property situation of the Balkan people improved with each passing year. A monastic school was opened – first at the church, and later a secular one up to the fourth grade in a private home. The first teacher in this school was Paraskev Genov from Ruse, and after the Liberation – Tsoki Stefanov from Gabrovo. In the school year 1897-1898, the students were: I grade – 15; II grade – 28; III grade – 12; IV grade – 15. Later, the school became a central school and children from neighboring villages came to study in Chereshovo. In the school year 1922/1923, a sixth grade was opened, and a year later, a seventh grade. Hristo Milchev was appointed principal. He was responsible for the construction of a new school building in 1934, which still stands in the courtyard of the boarding school today. It was a junior high school, but it soon proved to be insufficient because the number of students was increasing, and there were no junior high schools in the surrounding villages. That same year, the National Primary School and the National Mixed Junior High School were united into one National Primary School. That is why in 1936 a new large two-story building was built at the end of the village. The school experienced its greatest prosperity immediately after its opening in 1936. The principal Hristo Milchev and his wife Victoria, also a teacher, and the head teacher Georgi Militerov contributed to this. Thanks to his influence, many children from the village were sent to continue their education at the prestigious boys’ high school in Ruse.

For years, the schoolyard at the National Primary School “Father Paisii” has been cultivated as an experimental field by the students. The park of coniferous and deciduous trees around the school building was created with the work of the students. During the administrative reorganization in our country in 1959, the school in the village of Chereshovo also accepted children from the Turkish School in the village of Seslav, students from grades V to VIII.

At the school in the village of Chereshovo, young people not only from the village of Chereshovo, but also from the villages of Seslav, Kosharna and Stambolovo (Rousse region) received a diploma for completing primary education.

NOE “Otets Paisii” – village of Chereshovo, Razgrad region, in the period from 1964 to 1972, developed as a primary school. From the beginning of the period to the end of 1972, it expanded in terms of class size and number of students, as well as in terms of number of teaching staff. Starting with 12 teachers, by the end of the period it reached 20 teachers. In its development, in organizing the educational work and its results, it marked successes. Already at the beginning of the period, the school became a boarding school for the secondary course, recruiting its students mainly from the Kubrat region, but also from the entire district. The primary course remained with merged two by two classes for the children only from Chereshovo. However, the following year, 1964/1965, the 100th anniversary of the school was celebrated. For this purpose, extensive preliminary preparation was carried out to improve the material base and improve the educational work. The entire public was involved in the preparation and organization of the anniversary celebration. All former teachers and principals, prominent public figures and former students were invited to attend the celebration, a large number of whom attended. Also present were MP Petar Kolev and Head of the Public Education Ivan Petrov. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the school, the following were awarded: the school with the Order of Cyril and Methodius, 1st degree, the retired teacher Lyubka Kolarova, also with the Order of Cyril and Methodius, 1st degree, and the school principal Hristo Georgiev with the Medal “For Labor Distinction”.

During the 1968/1969 school year, the school also underwent changes in its structure and construction. The elementary course also accepted students from the boarding school and the merged classes there were liquidated. For the first time, the merged classes in Chereshovo, which had existed for many years, were liquidated and the school was transformed into a full-fledged primary boarding school from grades I to VIII, as well as with double classes for grade VIII. At the end of November of the same year, the students from the boarding school were accommodated in a new building built in the center of the village. The building has a capacity of sleeping quarters for 100 children and a dining hall. The building is furnished appropriately.

The educational work in the boarding school was organized according to a new special program for full-time education, in which there are no separate teachers and educators, and everyone is a teacher-educator. This was done at the suggestion of the District Inspector Yordan Georgiev and the school director Hristo Georgiev. This is how it worked until the end of the 1971/1972 school year, with very good results. In the period 1964–1972, the teachers were mainly regular teachers, among whom there were also those with higher education. The school management also worked to promote local staff through part-time education. As a result, local junior high school teachers work in the village, who meet the needs of the school. During the period 1964–1972, the school achieved a number of successes.

The population migrated, the number of students decreased and the school was threatened with closure. The director Hristo Georgiev met with responsible persons from the Inspectorate in Razgrad, visited the Ministry of Education and found a form under which the school could continue to exist. It was decided to open a boarding school, where children of minority origin would live and study at the school. The building was built by a construction crew from the TKZS and from the 1963-1964 school year the boarding school began to operate. It existed for 13 years. The junior high school was closed in 1970 and the school was left with only primary grades for education, and in 1976 it was closed.

Community center

The beginning of the community center in the village of Chereshovo was laid in 1920 by the teacher Georgi Militerov, who read an article in a magazine about the organization of Dutch-type community centers and decided to open one in Chereshovo based on its model. The community center was housed in a private home and was named “Hristo Botev”. Plays were prepared by amateur artists, and the income from its activities supported the community center. At first, the school hall was used as a stage.

Under the leadership of Militerov, the collection of money for the purchase of literature began, for which purpose the youth sang Christmas carols according to an old folk custom. In 1943, a group of enthusiastic young people formed an initiative committee, whose task was to begin construction of a community center building, but the administrative authorities of the time did not provide assistance.

The first film screenings took place outdoors, on the square where Gencho Apostolov’s house is located. The white wall of the house was used as a screen. Visitors brought chairs and the improvised cinema was in operation. In 1959, a new two-story community center building with two halls was built in the village, on the site of the former Turkish barns. This is the new community center with a modern cinema, and with the funds collected by the villagers, a cinema machine was purchased. A paid cinematographer was also appointed. There are no cinemas in the surrounding villages and very often people from these villages come to Chereshovo to watch films. Twice a week, the students from the boarding school are taken to the cinema.

The community center is equipped with a large modern stage. The library has over 5000 volumes of books. There is a singing group for authentic folklore, local folklore rituals are studied, customs and traditions are popularized and preserved in this way.

In the 1950s and 1960s, it was regularly visited by singing groups of national-level singers.

In 1957, a village assembly decided to begin construction of a community center building with funds from self-taxation and voluntary labor. The construction of the building began in September 1958 and was finally completed at the end of 1960. In the newly built building, conditions were created for improving and expanding the cultural and educational activities of the community center. A vocal group, a dance group, a group for artistic speech, and a women’s folk choir were created, which took part in a number of holidays and celebrations, and participated in the reviews of amateur art in Kubrat and Razgrad. The theater group annually presented the plays “Boryana”, “Furious Oaths”, “Masters”, etc.

A fact that has a negative impact on the activities of the community center and the number of its members is the migration process. As a result, the number of residents of the village is gradually decreasing, the school is closed, and the participation of teachers and students in the community center’s events is decreasing.

The necessary funds for the overall maintenance of the community center and the events held are provided through subsidies and grants from the Agricultural Industrial Complex “Soviet Russia” – Kubrat, the District Council for Culture – Razgrad, rents, and income from performances.

The main activity of the community center is the library activity and the efforts of the Board are directed to its improvement and expansion. The library’s book collection is annually replenished by purchasing newly published interesting books and subscribing to a number of newspapers and magazines. The majority of readers are pensioners, housewives, students and young people. Along with the replenishment of the book collection, a large number of books are deducted from it due to scrapping – morally and physically obsolete.

Another direction of the community center’s activity is cultural-mass and cultural-educational activities, carried out jointly with the FO and other mass organizations. They are expressed in the holding of sit-ins, broadcasts on the local radio station, thematic evenings, celebration of national and international holidays, readers’ conferences, etc.

Also a main direction in the activity of the community center is amateur art. At the beginning of 1977, several groups were working – a theater group, a folk female choir, a male vocal group and a circle of artistic speech. The above groups had particularly good performances in 1981, when the 1300th anniversary of the establishment of the Bulgarian state was celebrated. At that time, an authentic folklore group was also established. The amateur groups took part in a number of celebrations, the “APK” stage, etc. They regularly participated in the amateur art competitions, ranking at municipal, regional and county levels.

During this period, a theater group was established with the director Radinka Stancheva, and female and male vocal groups with the directors Nadezhda Dyankova and Hristo Georgiev. The theater group performed plays in the village and other settlements.

The Chitalishte is the organizer of Grandfather’s Day, celebrated only in the village of Chereshovo – on January 22. (after Babinden ). Its celebration began nearly 70 years ago. The idea belongs to the residents of Chereshovo, Damyan Hadzhiyski and Milcho Stanev. On Babinden, while they were in the pub and drinking, they decided that it was not fair for only grandmothers to have fun and invented the men’s Grandfather’s Day. According to them, they are also involved in the creation of children and their upbringing. And so, in spite of the grandmothers, the grandfathers in Chereshovo also had a holiday.

They did it to get revenge on the women who, on Babinden, jokingly asked them to take off their pants or to buy themselves off with some money.

On this day, the oldest man in the village is proclaimed “Grandfather”. The celebrants take him from his house and, accompanied by music, head to the village fountain, where they bathe him for good health. Then they return to the village square, beat the hortse and head to the community center for food, drink and fun, including wine tasting. The men measure their drinking endurance with the proverb “A dry bottle dries on the road”. If they say it three times without getting it wrong, they can treat themselves to another glass.

The festival is of local and regional importance.

TCZS

A labor cooperative agricultural farm was formed on December 12, 1948 and took the name of the inter-union member Dimitar Genchev. Yanko Dzhenkov was elected chairman. Those who did not become members of the TKZS were separated from their land, given infertile land, and imposed taxes. Massification was carried out in 1956. Mechanized cultivation of the land was introduced at a rapid pace. The cooperation of the land continued almost until 1957. New and modern equipment was introduced to obtain higher yields. This necessitated artificial irrigation of the land. In 1963, the construction of a canal and pumping station began, which was completed in 1965. Plant growing and animal husbandry were developed.

At the General Assembly of November 9, 1958, the members of the TKZS – village of Yuper, TKZS – village of Gorichevo, TKZS – village of Bozhurovo, TKZS – village of Zvanartsi united in the OTKZS “Sever” – village of Yuper, and in March 1970 the OTKZS “D. Genchev” – village of Chereshovo joined. It merged into the APC “Soviet Russia” – Kubrat.

In the period 1969 – 1975, the cooperative received the bread ovens from the TKZS and opened a new activity – bread production in the villages of Chereshovo and Seslav, Razgrad region.

In 1991, the TKZS was liquidated, and in 1992, the Agricultural Cooperative “Consciousness” was established.

Monuments

A monument to those who died in the Balkan Wars has been erected, and a memorial plaque has been placed on the community center building, on which are inscribed the names of those who died during World War II. In the churchyard, a marble monument has been erected to Lieutenant Vladimir Alexandrov, who led a cavalry detachment from the 47th Ukrainian Infantry Regiment, who arrived in Chereshovo, but fell ill and died.

In 1964, a monument to Dimitar Genchev was erected in the center of the village, who went as a volunteer to Spain and participated in the Civil War against Franco as an interbrigadist.

Sources:

State Archives – Razgrad: f. 367; ; f. 370; f. 239 k; f. 584; f. 629 B; f. 457.
