Its great popularity may be due to the fact that it combines several solemn occasions. For the Roma, it is Ederlezi, for the Turks and Tatars it is Haderlez. On May 6th, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Saint George the Victorious and it has been declared an official holiday in Bulgaria, as well as the Day of Bravery and the Bulgarian Army, when the battle flags are consecrated and water is blessed for the health of our servicemen. It is also celebrated as a holiday of the shepherd and of people engaged in sheep breeding.

Slivo Pole is known in the region for its hardworking farmers, and Gergovden is closely associated with the beginning of the new year for the farmers. It is
precisely because of this that the whole character of the holiday is imbued with many customs related to health, agricultural crops and livestock breeding, and the festival attracts hundreds of participants and spectators.

“St. George’s Day of the Ethnic Groups” festival, gathering in a colorful bouquet the holidays of the ethnic groups living in Slivo Pole.

[45,38,39
34
