The only holiday in our country, Grandfather’s Day, is celebrated on January 22 in the Ruse village of Chereshovo. In 1957, after Babinden had passed, the men of the village gathered for an evening talk, then one of the local Zevzetsi – Milcho Stanchev asked if women have Babinden, why shouldn’t men have Grandfather’s Day too. According to him, they are also involved in the creation of children and their upbringing. And so, in defiance of the grandmothers, the grandfathers in Chereshovo also made a holiday.
Its celebration is immediately after Babinden.
The holiday begins with the election of a Grandfather, who must be cheerful, with a good disposition, be joking with the grandmothers and have grandchildren. The participants in the holiday decorate the donkey and the cart with which they will go to the grandfather’s house. He awaits them with a laid table and after the treat, two of the men carry him in their arms to the cart. Then Grandfather, together with the local men, goes around the houses of the grandmothers and greets them. The grandmothers welcome them with a treat and prayers for health and fertility.
The holiday also includes traditional rituals, such as bathing Grandfather for health in the village fountain. At the end of the celebration, a horo is played, to which all the inhabitants of the village gather.
