The protected area “Kalimok-Brashlen” was created with the aim of protecting one of the few remaining Danube wetlands and its unique biological diversity. The area under consideration can be characterized as one of the 10 most representative areas in the country. The main conservation value is determined by the presence of natural marsh, riparian and wetland habitats. The specified area is a habitat for a large number of rare nationally and European plant and animal species and ornithologically important sites. Due to the rich biodiversity available, the area is an attractive place for ecotourism.
The Kalimok-Brushlen Protected Area covers an area of about 6,000 hectares. It is located on the territory of the Coast and includes the Bulgarian islands on the Danube: Mishka, Malak Brushlen, Golyam Brushlen, Pyasachnik, Bezimenen, Kalimok and Radetski. In the protected area, the flora is represented by 109 species of algae, 10 species of bryophytes, 16 species of mushrooms, over 300 higher plants. The greatest wealth is the birds. Due to over 242 species of birds, of which 134 are nesting, the swamp near the town of Tutrakan has been declared by Bird Life International as an Important Ornithological Site. Ornithological observations are of the highest priority, because the birds are the most numerous, attractive and easy to observe.
