Every year from May 30 to June 2, a traditional march “In the footsteps of the detachment of Tanyo Voivoda”.
The detachment of Tanyo Voivoda is the second detachment organized by the Bulgarian emigration in Romania, which on May 17, 1876, descended on the Tutrakan shore near the village of Pozharevo, parallel to the detachment of Hristo Botev.
The detachment, consisting of 28 people, entered into three battles and suffered nine casualties in its 11-day march to the Balkans, trying to support the Sliven rebels at the end of the April Uprising. It passed by 30 villages in the Ludogorie and Polomie regions without receiving almost any support from the frightened local Bulgarian population.
The exact route of the detachment was established under the leadership of the local historian Boris Iliev.
Botev’s detachment was defeated at Okolchitsa Peak, and Tanyo Stoyanov’s (Tanyo voivode) detachment at Kerchan Bair near the present-day village of Aprilovo, Popovo Municipality. Both voivodes, in their conscious self-sacrifice, died in the final battles.
Traditionally, on June 2, on Kerchan Bair above the village of Aprilovo in front of the monument to the Voivode, the national march “In the footsteps of the detachment of Tanyo Voivode” ends with the laying of wreaths, a solemn concert, many guests and an improvised festival.
The march is the largest patriotic initiative among youth in Northeastern Bulgaria (the participants are between 200 and 350 students) and is organized by the Cultural and Educational Society “Rodno Ludogorie” with chairman Dr. Anatoly Kanev.
