July morning – welcoming the sunrise on the banks of the Danube River.
“July Morning” or Julaya for short (named after the famous Uriah Heep song from 1971 “July Morning”) is the most traditional hippie holiday in Bulgaria, which originated in the mid-1980s. July in English means “July” and from there “July Morning”. Although the tradition is associated with the hippie movement in America, it exists in Bulgaria to this day.
Early in the morning of July 1, young and old welcome the sunrise on the seashore or on a river. Traditionally, “July Morning” symbolizes discontent and the desire for personal freedom.
The year is 2018. Uriah Heep vocalist John Lawton sings his iconic hit July Morning for the last time in Bulgaria. The place is Tutrakan. Every year, rock legends gather by the Danube River to welcome the first July morning. In 2024,
Johnny Joeli shared after his performances with the BTR group, “It’s incredible! Only now do I fully understand this tradition of yours – watching the sun rise and people being in sync with the music. I will be there next year for this show.”
